As can be deduced from the testimonial above, Andrew has experience in home-schooling. His most recent pupil, in 2016, was a six-year-old boy who had suffered such severe bullying at his local primary school that his parents were obliged to withdraw him completely from the institution, because the problem went unresolved. As it took sometime to find him a place elsewhere, Andrew was engaged to teach him at home during the intervening period.
Because the bullying had affected the boy's ability to learn in a classroom environment, he had fallen considerably behind his peers in both Maths and Reading. Andrew therefore embarked upon a programme of increasing the boy's basic understanding in these two areas, with a particular focus on developing and reinforcing core skills, in order to give the child a strong foundation upon which to build once he moved to his new school.
This experience in general, primary phase home teaching complements Andrew's previous engagement - a three-hour appointment to teach A-Level German to a girl from southeast London who, in contrast with the child mentioned above, had been home-schooled her entire life.
Although Andrew's engagement in that household was short - as the public transport route from Barking proved itself too convoluted to be viable on a longterm basis - the experience was very useful, as it gave him exposure to one kind of approach to home schooling, whereby a standard academic school curriculum was followed, but outside a school environment.
Andrew is aware that some families who homeschool their children for philosophical or pedagogical reasons - as opposed to undertaking it as a crisis measure, as happened with the family mentioned above - take different approaches to the way that their child is educated.
Andrew feels that he will fit best with homeschooling families which take a more academically traditional approach to education.
